Cricket overdose in India could help F1

Bernie Ecclestone had conceded recently that Formula 1 will never be as popular as cricket in India, but that has not dissuaded the Indian drivers believing that the country’s inaugural Grand Prix could revolutionise the scenario.
"There is an overdose of cricket so people will want a change ... I believe it's going to be a full house," Narain Karthikeyan was quoted on Reuters.

"Everyone is positive about India. They are looking forward to it because India is a global figure and everyone wants to visit India and have a good time and a good race."

Karun Chandhok pointed out optimistically that the 120,000-capacity Buddh International Circuit would be a sell-out.

"I believe there is a big enough audience and I was told 27 million viewers watch Formula 1 on ESS (ESPN-STAR Sports) and if you get 0.5 percent of that, that's over 120,000 people," Chandhok said.

The recent loss of the Indian cricket team suffered at the hands of England recently is an additional boon to other sports that have taken a back seat in the country.

“The one positive consequence of our cricketing debacle in England could be a MICROSCOPIC bit of interest in other sports--finally!” industrialist Anand Mahindra, who runs a 125cc MotoGP team, tweeted.
